Shafi was born on 23 October 1945. In the year 1982, he started his movie career with the movie Vijeta. He came into limelight by playing the role of Inspector Hyder Ali in the 1983 blockbuster film Ardh Satya. Shafi was mostly seen in the role of police. According to media reports, Shafi's acting and dialogue delivery used to be so beautiful even in supporting roles that even in small scenes, he used to attract people's attention. Shafi worked in the film industry for almost decades.

He worked with Vinod Khanna in movies like Jurm, Izzatdar, Phool Bane Angare, Krantiveer, Yashwant, Akele Hum Akele Tum and with Nana Patekar he worked in Yashwant Movie and this film proved to be the last movie of his career. If we talk about the small screen, then he played the lead role in 'Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi'. Along with which he was also seen playing an important role in Gulzar's serial Ghalib. Shafi, who won everyone's heart with his performance on screen, said goodbye to the world at the age of just 50. He died on March 13, 1996 at the age of 50.
