NEW DELHI: On Martyrs' Day (Shaheed Diwas) on Thursday, March 23, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid respect to the freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru and said that these men are greats who made an immeasurable contribution to our struggle for freedom. 

It was on  March 23, 1931 that British authorities executed the three freedom fighters by hanging them as part of the Lahore conspiracy case.

PM Modi posted on Twitter, saying, "India will never forget the sacrifice made by Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Bhagat Singh. These people are legends who gave our fight for independence an unmatched contribution."

Among the leaders who paid their respects were Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Keshav Prasad Maurya.

 "Millions of salutes to the revolutionaries Bhagat Singh ji, Rajguru ji and Sukhdev ji on their sacrifice day, who sacrificed their everything for the country.", Gadkari tweeted. 

"An emotional remembrance of Amar Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev ji, the Indian youth's national heroes who died on this day. The youth of the nation are inspired by the great job he did to further Mother India's aim of freedom. These sacrifices will always be appreciated by the nation" Om Birla said in tweet.

The official Twitter handle of 'Amit Mahotsav' also shared a video on the 'shaheed special series' showcasing the inspiring stories of the freedom fighters. People across India paid their tributes to the freedom fighters with trending Hashtags of 'Bhagat Singh', 'Sukhdev', 'Rajguru', and 'Shaheed Diwas'.

To honour the Indian revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev who were hanged by the British Government in 1931, March 23 is honoured as Shaheed Diwas. In 1928, the trio was convicted guilty of killing deputy police superintendent JP Saunders in retaliation for Lala Lajpat Rai's passing. Bhagat Singh was 23, Rajguru was 22 and Sukhdev was 23 when they were hung to death at Lahore Central Prison.
