Tharoor reaches HC over PM's 'scorpion' statement, challenged lower court verdict

New Delhi: The matter of the statement comparing PM Narendra Modi to a scorpion sitting on a Shivling has now reached the Delhi High Court. Congress' Veerstha leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has challenged the summons issued by the lower court on the statement in the High Court. Earlier in February, the court issued summons to Tharoor and fined him 5000 rupees.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had said during the Bangalore Literature Festival on 28 October 2018 that, 'Modi is like a scorpion sitting on a Shivling, you cannot remove it from your hand nor hit it with a sandal. ' After this, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajiv Babbar filed a defamation case against Shashi Tharoor.

While hearing on this matter, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court issued a summons to Shashi Tharoor and ordered to appear which Tharoor has challenged in the Delhi High Court. The previous hearing of the case had said on behalf of the petitioner Rajeev Babbar that Tharoor had made this statement with bad faith. Due to this, not only the Hindu deity was degraded but it was also insulting to the Prime Minister.
