Chennai: Legendary Congress leader and MP of Kerala Dr. Shashi Tharoor has hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over rising fuel prices and unemployment, commenting that it is a result of the ruling party's mismanagement of the economy. The increase in petrol and diesel prices was the ''worst in many ways,'' he said and claimed that the centre gave little stimulus to the common man who is encountering problems due to the cascading effect on the prices of essential commodities.
While addressing a press conference at Chennai, Tharoor pointed out that there was no increase in fuel prices before elections, but afterward, the price had been hiked 40 times. He said that the country's economy is reeling because of the Modi-led Central government. Many entities have started cutting salaries and the fuel price has impacted the price of every other essential item. Mismanagement of the economy has lead to joblessness, even the demonetisation disaster. They never prepared for the economy. He went on to say, - 96 per cent of the hiked taxes were going to Delhi and demanded that a larger share be given to state governments. "Import duties on essential items like pulses and cooking oil have gone up under the NDA government. There has been a rise in GST. The government must cut taxes and cess on fuel and give a larger share to states," he urged.
Hitting out at the Centre for ''complete disregard'' for the common man, the Tharoor claimed that the central government had collected about Rs 4.2 lakh crore last year by way of tax on petrol and diesel alone.
