New Delhi: A parliamentary committee on IT affairs led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will hold a meeting on 'Civil Data Security and Security' related to Pegasus. The meeting will be held on July 28 and will be attended by members of the ministry of IT and the Ministry of Home Affairs. On the Pegasus issue, Shashi Tharoor tweeted, "It has been proved that the phone checked in India had a pegasus attack as the product is sold only to the government.''
'The question now arises as to which government? If the Government of India says that they did not do it, any other government did, it is a matter of serious concern about national security.' Tharoor further said, 'If it is found that it is our government and it is authorized (to do so), the Government of India needs to clarify, because the law allows only national security, communication to prevent the issue of terrorism. It's illegal.' This is not the first time the panel has raised the issue of Israeli spyware. In 2019, after WhatsApp's weaknesses came to light, the panel heard about the issue from the concerned departments.
An international media association had said on Sunday that an attempt was made to hacking through Israeli spyware Pegasus of more than 300 verified mobile phone numbers, including two ministers, more than 40 journalists, three opposition leaders, and a sitting judge, along with several businessmen and activists in India. These include the numbers of several top leaders, 40 journalists, Supreme Court judges, and others, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, election strategist Prashant Kishore, which has been in the news ever since.
