Kathmandu: Sher Bahadur Deuba, the Prime Minister of Nepal, has been re-elected as the President of the Nepali Congress (NC). Dr. Shekhar Koirala, his only opponent, was defeated. During the party's 14th general convention, Deuba received 2733 votes while Koirala received 1855 votes.

Deuba, Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Bimlalendra Nidhi, and Kalyan Gurung were among the first to enter the race. After no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, the election went to a second round, with Deuba and Koirala receiving the first and second most votes, respectively.

A total of 4,623 votes were cast in the second round of voting. Only 4,588 votes were valid out of the total. Apart from Koirala, all three lost candidates threw their support behind Deuba in the second round, allowing him to win.

In 1990, President Deuba, who began his political career as a student leader, was an enthusiastic participant in Nepal's democracy struggle. Deuba was elected to the House of Representatives from Dadeldhura-1 in the 1991 elections.

Deuba was born on June 13, 1946, in Dadeldhura district, and was re-elected from the same constituency in the 1994 midterm elections, where he was also elected as the Nepali Congress's parliamentary party leader. Since 2016, he has served as the NC's president. Deuba became Prime Minister for the first time in 1995.
