CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) suspended senior leader Jagir Kaur from the party on Wednesday and gave her a two-day deadline to quit engaging in anti-party activities; if she did not, harsh disciplinary action would be followed.

Sikander Singh Maluka, the chairman of the SAD Disciplinary Committee, who made the announcement, stated that Jagir Kaur had to make it clear that she will not run in the upcoming elections for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). He informed the local media, "No one is beyond party discipline. If she does not do this, the party is compelled to act against her."

Maluka provided specifics, claiming that Jagir Kaur had been engaging in anti-party actions for the past few months and was collaborating with groups opposed to SAD.

He said that senior party members Daljit Singh Cheema and Surjit Singh Rakhra had recently met with Jagir Kaur for three hours in an effort to provide her with advice. She had previously met with party President Sukhbir Singh Badal, but she insisted on running in the SGPC elections. The chairman of the disciplinary committee stated that the party had also had complaints from SGPC members who claimed Jagir Kaur was forcing them into endorsing her as the SGPC President candidate.

He claimed that the leader's media utterances also showed that she was adamant on running in the elections, even if it went against the wishes of the party.

Maluka added that the disciplinary committee, which met here, had also taken into account senior leader Jagmeet Singh Brar's response to the show-cause notice served on him and found it lacking.

Before moving further with the case, he continued, "We will give him another opportunity to clarify his statements and acts."
