The Birmingham edition of Common Wealth Games 2022 has excluded Shooting in its agenda which is now followed by the bid committee of Hamilton city. The game was already excluded in 1970 edition in Edinburgh. Shooting is not a core sport in CWG programme but is a very part of every other game since Kingston 1966. Lou Frapporti, chairman of Hamilton 2026 Games bid committee, conformed that shooting is not a part of its game proposal in a virtual community forum.

He said,” One of the challenges we’ve had is working with the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Sports to come up with a Games programme that is modified and a little less ambitious than their usual Games programme”. However, there is no support from the government for the Hamilton bid since it shifted its attention to hosting the games from 2030 to 2026 upon the request from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). If it hosted in 2030, it marks Hamilton centenary Games as it hosted previously in 1930. The shooting powerhouse India has convinced the CGF to include shooting in the list after offering to host the events in Chandigarh. 2022 Commonwealth Games’ shooting and archery events will be hosted by the Indian city.

The CGF executive board confirmed a date in January 2022 for these two games which is six months before the actual CWG at Birmingham. The Chandigarh events result will be included in 2022 Birmingham full medallist a week after the closing ceremony. Frapporti added, “At the end of the day we understand that the overriding concern is cost and risk- and in all regards, all of us are working very hard to be as inclusive to as many sports as possible, but also trying to balance the cost associated with the delivery of those events in 2026”.
