The move has been taken by the Congress leadership as part of a strategy to keep Siddaramaiah a strong challenge to Yeddyurappa and keep Karnataka's second most influential Kuruva community. While Siddaramaiah has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party, SR R Patil has been appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
