After getting backlash for his sexist remarks in response to Saina Nehwal's tweet on Tuesday, January 11, actor Siddharth released a public apology. The world number one in badminton came to Twitter on January 5 to denounce Prime Minister Narendra Modi's security threat in Ferozepur, Punjab. According to Nehwal, "No country can claim to be safe if the security of its own prime minister is jeopardised. In the clearest possible terms, I denounce anarchists' heinous attack on Prime Minister Modi."

South star Siddharth tweeted in reaction to Saina "The world's most subtle cock champion... Thank God for India's guardians. Rihanna, you should be ashamed of yourself." Netizens and Saina Nehwal were not pleased with this. Many people flocked to Twitter to express their displeasure at the star's alleged sexist remarks. Siddharth eventually shared his apologetic letter for his "rude joke" on the internet a few days later.

The actor stated, “Dear Saina, I want to apologise to you for my rude joke that I wrote as a response to a tweet of yours a few days ago. I may disagree with you on many things but even my disappointment or anger when I read your tweet, cannot justify my tone and words. I know I have more grace in me than that. As for the joke…if a joke needs to be explained, then it wasn’t a very good joke to begin with. Sorry about a joke that didn’t land. I, however, must insist my word play and humour had none of the malicious intent that so many people from all quarters have attributed to it. I am a staunch feminist ally and I assure there was no gender implied in my tweet and certainly no intent to attack you as a woman. I hope we can put this behind us and that you will accept my letter. You will always be my Champion. Honestly, Siddharth.”

This comes after Harvir Singh Nehwal, Saina's father, demanded a public apology from the actor. "The player's father said in an interview with ANI, " "On Twitter, a veteran of the film industry (actor Siddharth) made some derogatory remarks about Saina (Nehwal). I was offended by his remark. He should apologise and come out in the open. Our household is in a state of chaos. Saina is also dissatisfied." Even contemporaries in the entertainment sector, such as Khushbu Sundar and Chinmayi Sripaada, have previously criticised Siddharth's reaction.
