Amritsar: Former Punjab Congress unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu will surrender in a local court in Patiala on Friday in the 1988 'road rage' case. The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one year in jail in the case. During his stay in jail, Sidhu will not get any salary for 3 months. Sidhu has earned millions during his many shows on TV and as a cricketer, but according to the Punjab Jail Manual, Sidhu will "work without pay" for three months in the Patiala Central Jail before he starts earning.

Sidhu will be kept in the same Patiala Central Jail where his arch rival and Akali leader Bikram Majithia, who is facing trial in drug case, is imprisoned. Jail Minister Harjot Singh Bains has said that, 'We have already ended the VIP culture in jails. All the prisoners live in similar conditions and facilities are provided as per the jail manual. The same will happen for Navjot Sidhu or anyone else. Known for his colorful dressing sense, Sidhu will also have to wear white clothes which are "compulsory for all convicts inside the jails of Punjab".

As per the jail rules, Sidhu, who has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment, will be trained for three months without pay before being classified as an unskilled, semi-skilled or skilled prisoner. After this, depending on their category, they will earn between Rs 30 to Rs 90 per day. Convicted criminals can work eight hours a day and their earnings are borne by the government. 25% of the earnings are in the form of jail money, 75% is put in savings account.
