NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday that in the past 8 years, there has been considerable growth in MBBS seats of 87% and a massive increase in PG seats of 105% thanks to the government's concerted efforts.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to bringing about a significant paradigm shift in the nation's educational system and noted that, since 2014, many measures have been implemented to make it easier for the younger generation to obtain high-quality education in the nation.
The influence of numerous steps done for high-quality medical education was also emphasised by the minister of health.
"At every turn and corner of the nation, we may observe transformation. We can build a comprehensive educational ecosystem in the nation with this momentum and collaboration among stakeholders" Mandaviya said in press briefing.
He added that while India only had 387 medical colleges in 2014, the system was plagued with far too many issues. "Since the Modi government came into office, concerted efforts have been taken to train and enhance the cost and accessibility to quality education for our students."
Under the Modi government, there is a paradigm change from input- to outcome-based approaches and reforms. As a result, there will be 648 medical colleges in operation by 2022, up by a staggering 96% in the number of Government Medical Colleges (GMC) alone and 42% in the private sector since 2014. Currently, 355 of the country's 648 medical colleges are public, and 293 are private. Also, there has been a significant 87 percent rise in MBBS seats from 51,348 in 2014 to 96,077 in 2022. Similarly, PG seats have observed an increase of 105 per cenr with 31,185 seats in 2014 to 63,842 in 2022, said Mandaviya.
