New Delhi: Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, President, Serum Institute of India (SII) has penned praises for the Modi government, recalling the red-tapism system faced by the vaccine industry in the past and the harassment of drug controllers. Poonawalla has said that the circumstances have changed and the bureaucracy is now working as per the laws of the present government. Actually, on Friday (13 August 2021), Poonawalla was giving a statement in a program organized at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune.

In this program, he was awarded the Lokmanya Tilak National Award by the Lokmanya Tilak Trust. Speaking at the event, Poonawalla said that 50 years ago, the vaccine industry had to face a lot of difficulties. He said that red-tapism prevailed to such an extent that one had to fall at the feet of officers and drug controllers to get permission. Dedicating his award to his late wife, Poonawalla said that when SII was established in 1966, even with the permission of the authorities, even basic necessities like electricity and water had to face difficulties.

However, he said that today the circumstances have changed and adequate cooperation is also being received by the government with timely permission. Praising the Modi government, Poonawalla said that red tape and license raj have now come within the laws of the Modi government and as a result of this change, SII's Covid-19 vaccine 'Covishield' could be launched soon. He said that transport and communication also used to be a big challenge and he himself had to fall at the feet of officers and drug controllers, but now there is such a drug controller, who is ready to work even after the office is over and immediately also gives feedback. Poonawalla said that the era of 'maska polish' is no more.
