New Delhi: In the Kisan Andolan, dalit Lakhbir Singh was killed in a Taliban manner and hanged by the police at the Singhu border. His right hand was also hung together. The Nihang had described the deceased as "wicked" and said that those who insulted Guru Granth Sahib would be punished in the same way. He has now met the family members of Lakhbir Singh, a member of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Felicitation Committee. Lakhbir's 35-year-old wife says that Lakhbir, who believes in 'Babaji' (Guru Gobind Singh), can never do such a thing (Guru Granth sahib's humiliation).

Talking to the media, Lakhbir Singh's family, who live in Cheema Kalan village in Tarantaran district of Punjab, said that he was a Sikh who used to go to the Gurudwara twice a day and pray. The family is not sure why Lakhbir went to Delhi and has demanded an inquiry into the matter. His uncle Harnam Singh says the Nihang made a video of Lakhbir being killed, but there is no video evidence of the allegation over which he was killed. Lakhbir's parents died in their childhood, after which it was the uncle who brought them up. He said that if Lakhbir ran away with the book, why did CCTV footage or people's phone cameras show anything, whereas the Singhu border is always crowded.

Half a dozen members of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Felicitation Committee met Lakhbir Singh's family but refused to apologise for the mob lynching. The committee said Lakhbir Singh was an agent of the central government as part of a major government conspiracy and was sent to Singhu border to defame the 'kisan andolan'. The committee further said that the leaders have unnecessarily made it an issue of Dalits, while both the dead and the dead were 'Religious Sikhs(Dalits).'
