The University Grants Commission (UGC) is set to introduce the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) aimed at enhancing the employability of undergraduate students. This innovative program will integrate practical industry experience into degree courses, starting from January-February 2025.

The UGC has drafted guidelines for the AEDP, which were reviewed during a meeting on October 3. These guidelines will soon be available for public consultation on the UGC website, allowing stakeholders to provide feedback.

Designed to provide hands-on training, the AEDP will incorporate apprenticeship training into undergraduate programs offered by UGC-recognized higher educational institutions (HEIs) that meet specific accreditation or ranking criteria. The program aims to combine classroom learning with structured on-the-job training, equipping students with industry-relevant skills and ensuring they meet workforce demands.

According to the draft guidelines, apprenticeships can commence as early as the second semester and may account for up to 50 percent of the total degree duration. Students must complete a minimum of one semester of continuous apprenticeship. Credits for the degree will be awarded based on the hours spent in training, following the National Credit Framework, with a full year of apprenticeship translating to at least 40 credits.

The evaluation process will involve collaboration between industry professionals, faculty mentors, and the HEIs. Students participating in the AEDP may receive stipends, depending on whether the program is aligned with the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) or the Apprentices Act of 1961.
