Skoda has revealed the name of its upcoming subcompact SUV, set to hit the Indian market in 2025. The vehicle will be called the "Kylaq," continuing the brand's unique tradition of naming its SUVs with a 'K' at the start and a 'Q' at the end. This new model is set to compete with popular contenders like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra XUV 300.

The Meaning Behind "Kylaq"

The name "Kylaq" was chosen through a nationwide campaign titled "Name Your Skoda," which began in February 2024. This initiative invited public participation, receiving over 200,000 entries. "Kylaq" is inspired by the Sanskrit term for crystal and the sacred Mount Kailash. The final selection was made from ten options: Kwiq, Kymaq, Kylaq, Kariq, Kyroq, Kosmiq, Kayaq, Kaiq, Kliq, and Karmiq.

In a unique twist, the individual who suggested the name Kylaq will become the first owner of the new Skoda SUV upon its release. Additionally, ten other winners will be awarded a trip to Skoda’s headquarters in Prague, including a tour of the Skoda Museum and the city. The names of these winners will be announced today at 2 pm on Skoda Auto India’s social media channels.

Pricing and Competition

When it launches, the Skoda Kylaq will face competition from vehicles such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV 300. The base model is anticipated to be priced around ₹8 lakh, with the top variant potentially reaching up to ₹14 lakh, both ex-showroom.

Design and Platform Details

Although detailed specifications are still under wraps, Skoda has confirmed that the Kylaq will be built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the same foundation used for the Kushaq and Slavia sedan. Preliminary teasers have shown some design features, including a split headlamp setup and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The latest teaser also reveals the side profile of the SUV, which includes roof rails and wraparound tail lamps. Interior features remain undisclosed for now.

Expected Powertrain

The Kylaq is expected to share its powertrain with the Kushaq, which includes a 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine generating 115 hp and 178 Nm of peak torque. It will likely offer a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
