Smriti Irani helps carry ex-village head's body for last rites

Amethi: Newly elected Amethi MP and BJP leader Smriti Irani on Sunday lent a shoulder to mortal remains of her close aide Surendra Singh. Surendra Singh was shot dead on Late Saturday. Unidentified miscreants had opened fire on the former Baraulia village head while he was asleep on the veranda outside his home. The incident took place hours after Singh held a victory rally for the newly-elected MP in Amethi.

50-year-old Singh was referred to a government hospital in Lucknow but later succumbed to his injuries during treatment, news agency PTI quoted Assitional Superintendent of Police, Daya Ram as saying. The attack took place merely a few kilometers away from the district headquarters of Gauriganj in Amethi. 

The news of Singh's murder comes days after Irani was declared the winner of the Lok Sabha election from Amethi. She wrested the traditional Congress bastion from Rahul, winning by a margin of 55,120 votes.
