NEW DELHI: Union Minister Smriti Irani clarified her position on the issue of period leave for women employees, questioning why employers should be informed about a woman's menstrual cycle. She expressed concerns about mandatory paid period leave policies, emphasizing that it might lead to women feeling pressured to disclose personal information to their employers.

Addressing the media, Irani tackled the controversy sparked by her earlier statement in Parliament. She had previously highlighted that menstruation is a natural process and the government wasn't planning a compulsory paid period leave policy. She raised a crucial point, envisioning potential harassment a woman might face if she opts not to take these proposed leaves. Irani emphasized the potential drawbacks, stating that such policies could require reporting periods to HR departments and accounts, thereby creating additional hurdles for women entering the workforce, particularly in factories and corporate settings.

During her address in the Rajya Sabha in response to RJD MP Manoj Jha's query, Irani stressed that menstruation is a natural aspect of a woman's life journey. She highlighted the importance of not restricting equal opportunities for women due to the perspective of individuals who do not menstruate.

Irani's remarks faced criticism, with Telangana leader K Kavitha expressing dismay over what she termed as Irani's ignorance. Acknowledging the backlash, Irani clarified that her intention was to raise a thought-provoking question after being asked about a menstruation leave policy for LGBTQIA+ individuals. She emphasized that her intention was to bring attention to the issue, even if it meant causing controversy.

Smriti Irani highlighted concerns about mandatory paid period leave policies, emphasizing the potential privacy issues and barriers to equal opportunities for women if such policies were implemented.
