BANGALORE: Sonia Gandhi, the president of the Congress, participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra organised by Rahul Gandhi on Thursday in the Karnataka district of Mandya.
The top leader's participation was eagerly anticipated by the party's workers and leaders, who saw it as a morale boost for the staff that will enhance the party's chances in the state.
After a two-day pause due to the Vijayadashami and Dussehra festivals, the Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed from the Mandya district.
Mallikarjun Kharge, a former leader of the Rajyasabha opposition, is also anticipated to join the Bharat Jodi Yatra.
For a brief period between the cities of Pandavapura and Nagamangala, Sonia Gandhi will join the padayatra. She had arrived in Mysuru on Monday and had put up in a resort near the backwaters of Kabini.
Since the Yatra in Karnataka has received positive feedback, the state's ruling BJP has decided to oppose the padayatra by organising a number of tours and conferences throughout the state. It began at Pandavapura this morning and is scheduled to finish at Chowdenahalli Gate in the Mandya district.
The 21-day Bharat Jodo Yatra, which is currently in its seventh day, is intended to traverse 511 kilometres. The yatra visited Mandya district after passing through Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts.
