MANIPUR: In recent developments in Manipur, sophisticated rocket debris has been discovered following a series of drone and high-tech missile attacks, according to a top police officer on Tuesday.

In response to these attacks, all internet services—including mobile data, leased lines, broadband, and VPN services—have been suspended until September 15, 2024.

Manipur Police have refuted claims made by Lt. Gen. P.C. Nair, a retired Director General of the Assam Rifles, who suggested in a recent interview that drones or rockets were not involved in the attacks. Nair also criticized the Manipur Police, labeling them as "Meitei Police" and questioning their impartiality in the ongoing ethnic conflict.

IGP (Administration) K Jayanta Singh addressed the controversy, stating, "The statement made is immature and reflects personal opinions rather than the stance of the Assam Rifles. We have clear evidence of drone and missile attacks, including recovered drones and rocket debris. It is regrettable that a distinguished commander would make such claims."

IGP (Operations) I.K. Muivah also responded to the allegations, emphasizing, "The assertion that Manipur Police consist solely of Meitei or Kuki members is incorrect. Our force includes diverse communities such as Nagas, Meiteis, Manipuri Muslims, and non-Manipuris, representing various religious backgrounds including Christians, Muslims, and Hindus. To label the Manipur Police as a Meitei force demonstrates a narrow perspective."

Regarding the drone attacks, Muivah reaffirmed, "We have provided official updates about the drone bombings and stand by our statements."

The ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meiteis of the Imphal Valley and the Kukis of the adjoining hills has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands of displaced persons since May of last year. The recent surge in violence, marked by drone and missile attacks, has led to at least eight deaths and over 12 injuries.
