New Delhi: Even three days after it ended, the second Ashes 2023 Test match between England and Australia is still generating a lot of buzz. Australia's Alex Carey made a contentious run out to get rid of Jonny Bairstow on the game's last day. After ducking a delivery, Bairstow left the crease to speak with his partner, believing the ball was out. Carey, however, seized the chance and struck the ball at the stumps to dismiss the England batsman for 10 off 22 deliveries.

The newest commentator on Carey's controversial stumping of Bairstow in the second Test is former West Indies batsman Brian Lara.

Lara shared a clip from his playing days on his official Instagram account, in which former England wicket-keeper Alec Stewart uses a similar strategy to dismiss him in an ODI match back in 1997. In a different film, Carey is seen ejecting Bairstow during the second Ashes Test of 2023 at Lord's.

Lara posted the films to express his position and to show the recent stumping's detractors that the spirit of the game was not violated.

He also said that in both cases, if the batter had been paying attention, he would have stayed inside the crease and avoided the dismissal. According to Lara, Carey intended to perform the stumping as soon as the ball was in his gloves.

Since the incident with Bairstow's stumping, a number of well-known English figures have publicly criticized the Australians. As usual, their strategy has been to stir up the "spirit of the game" controversy, which is naturally quite ambiguous when contrasted to the actual cricket rules.

However, Carey has received support from a large portion of the cricket community over the stumping, noting a number of instances where something similar has occurred in the past.
