Sri Lanka defeated Ireland by innings and 280 runs inside 3 days of the first Test and recorded its biggest victory margin today, April 18.

Ireland lost 13 wickets on the day, scoring 143 and 168 runs in response to Sri Lanka's declared score of 591-6.

Prabath Jayasuriya, a sluggish left-armer, led the Sri Lankans with a 10-wicket haul and claimed the game's final victim when he trapped Ben White for one shortly after tea. After posting a career-high 7-52 in the first inning, Jayasuriya took 3-56 in the second.

Ramesh Mendis, a spin bowling partner, finished with a match-high five wickets and the best statistics in the second innings of 4-76. Mendis became the first Sri Lankan reach 50 test wickets in 11 games, matching Dilruwan Perera's record.

The other four Irish wickets were taken by seamer Vishwa Fernando, who also claimed two wickets from opener Murray Commins.

The triumph outran Sri Lanka's previous record, which it held against Zimbabwe in 2004 by an innings and 254 runs.

Ireland is taking part in its debut Test series and is just playing its fifth test. On Monday, April 24, the second and final test begins at the same location.
