Sri Lankan Navy arrests six Tamil Nadu-fishermen

CHENNAI: The Sri Lankan Navy detained six Tamil Nadu fishermen in the vicinity of Karainagar on suspicion of poaching in that country's territorial seas. The six, who all hail from Tamil Nadu's Pudukottai region, left the port of Jagadapattinam on Monday.

According to the information that is now available, the fishermen were apprehended late on Monday after boarding a motorised watercraft and venturing out into the sea. Owner of the vessel and resident of Jagadapattinam K. Karthik (age 24), P. Devaraj (age 35), M. Suresh (age 43), I. Velmurugan (age 27), I. Sundaram (age 47), and K. Thirumeni were all detained (31).

They were taken to Mayilatti harbour for additional questioning, according to information available, sources in the Tamil Nadu Coastal Police said. The Sri Lankan Navy has detained numerous Tamil Nadu fishermen and impounded their motorised boats. Even local newspapers carried ads from the Sri Lankan Navy announcing the sale of the seized boats.

Prior to the arrests of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Sri Lankan Navy, fishermen in Ramanathapuram, Dhanushkodi, and other coastal areas of Tamil Nadu took to the streets and blocked roadways.
