CHENNAI: The Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, who have been residing in Dindigul rehabilitation camps for the past three decases, can now live in concrete houses.

M K Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, opened the rehabilitation centre for Sri Lankan Tamils on Wednesday, September 14,  from Chennai through video conference.

There are 321 homes in the seven-acre-large rehabilitation camp at Dindigul for Tamil refugees. The price to build these homes was Rs. 17.84 crore. Each residence, according to the Dindigul district government, contains a 300-square-foot living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Cost per house was Rs. 4.95 lakh. The project took nine months to complete after the first stone was set in December 2021.

A 60,000-liter overhead water tank is also included in the rehabilitation camp for Tamil migrants in Dindigul.
Currently residing in the Dindigul camp are 70 families who will be relocated to the new concrete homes. The Gopalpatti, Adiyanthu, and Thottanuthu camps' inmates will be transferred to the Dindigul rehabilitation camp.

Notably, it was the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi, who assigned thatched dwellings at Adiyanthu for Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka. After leaving the island nation during its civil conflict, the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees arrived in the state in 1990.

The beneficiaries received the keys to the homes from the Minister for Cooperation in Tamil Nadu, I. Periyasamy, the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, R. Sakkarapani, and the Minister for Minorities Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare, Gingee S. Masthan.
