Colombo: The new government of Sri Lanka has decided to change the 19th amendment implemented in 2015. In which the powers of the President have been curbed and the role of Parliament has been strengthened. On Wednesday, a senior minister said that the SLPP led by the ruling Rajapaksa had resolved to change it before the general elections.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the meeting of the Sri Lankan People's Party Cabinet before the formal opening of the new Parliament on 20 August, Information and Broadcasting Minister Kehlia Rambukwela said that the government has decided to change the 19th amendment. Along with being a minister, the spokesperson of the government, Rambukkuvela, said, "The cabinet has decided to amend 19A to bring 20A". However, he did not give further details in this regard as to which provisions of 19A will be changed or the government will choose to repeal it.

Let us tell you that 19A was the main electoral issue of the bygone government. 19A reduces politicization in government administration by ensuring independence of key pillars such as judiciary, public service and elections. Ever since 19A was implemented, the SLPP has been asking for its abolition. It is alleged that this amendment was done to politically stab Rajapaksa family members.
