SLPP's landslide victory in Sri Lanka General Election, Rajapaksa brothers' strength increased manifold

Colombo: The Rajapaksa brothers' party has registered a victory in the Lok Sabha elections held in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Podujna Party (SLPP) has got a two-thirds majority in the parliamentary elections, with which the way for Mahinda Rajapaksa to become Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has been cleared. Mahinda's brother Gotbaya Rajapaksa is already the President of Sri Lanka.

As per the results revealed, Mahinda Rajapaksa's SLPP has won a total of 145 seats. While the total seats are 225. Apart from these 145 seats, some allies are also in support of Mahinda Rajapaksa, in which he has a much larger number than the majority. Now the power of Rajapaksa brothers has increased more on parliamentary and constitutional issues in Sri Lanka. With the victory in the general elections, Mahinda Rajapaksa is confirmed to be the PM, while brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa became the President in November 2019.

PM Modi also congratulated Mahinda Rajapaksa for victory in the election on Thursday. PM Modi was among the earliest foreign leaders to congratulate Mahinda. PM Modi discussed on call with Mahinda Rajapaksa, on which Mahinda tweeted, "Thank you, PM Modi, for congratulating me on the phone. All the people of Sri Lanka look forward to working together with India, India and Sri Lanka are not only good friends but also allies."
