Chinese pay television company StarTimes partners with utility company Bboxx Solar to enable solar firm customers to access digital television services in Kenya.
Chinese pay television company StarTimes Kenya on Wednesday partnered with utility company Bboxx Solar to enable solar firm customers without electricity access to enjoy digital television services.
The partnership provides a new bundled offer that means solar customers who were previously without access to electricity can now buy a Bboxx solar home system with either a 24- or 32-inch television and get access to StarTimes channels.
Hanson Wang, the chief executive officer of StarTimes Kenya, said that under the agreement Bboxx Solar will now offer its clients television sets that have StarTimes hardware including antennas and satellite dishes thereby providing them with access to local and international television channels.
"This is a strategic partnership that will enable off-grid customers to access our rich content genre and we are confident that moving forward we will not only grow our subscriber base but also play a significant role in driving access to powerful social benefits that are achieved through access to information and entertainment by the households," Wang said in a statement issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
Under the deal, Bboxx customers will place a deposit of 5,499 shillings (about 47.86 U.S. dollars) for a 24-inch TV option, or 69.62 dollars for a 32-inch TV option inclusive solar appliance and other accessories.
Jeff Vanden Berghe, the managing director at Bboxx Solar, noted that the two brands will work closely together to offer unparalleled support toward ensuring a smooth customer experience as they partner toward transforming and unlocking the potential of Kenyans through access to clean energy, information and entertainment.
"We will leverage our individual strengths toward our goal of improving the quality of life for rural and urban dwellers. We see lots of potential in working with off-grid households where through this new partnership, we will not only provide clean energy solutions, but also access to infotainment," he added.
