WASHINGTON: The United States imposed sanctions on an Iranian national and his network of firms on Wednesday, accusing them of facilitating Iran in obtaining materials for its ballistic missile development.

The sanctions were implemented after Iran launched a missile attack on Erbil, Iraq, and a "Iranian-enabled Houthi" missile attack on a Saudi Aramco plant earlier this month, as well as previous missile attacks by Iranian proxies against Saudi Arabia and the UAE, according to reports.

The sanctions were targeted at an Iranian procurement agent called Mohammad Ali Hosseini and a network of firms that he was accused of using to buy ballistic missile fuel and related supplies in support of Tehran's missile programme, according to the Treasury.

According to the department, Hosseini obtained materials for a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responsible for ballistic missile research and development, which is subject to US sanctions.

P.B. Sadr Co., a procurement intermediary of Parchin Chemical Industries, which is part of Iran's Defense Industries Organization, was also targeted by the sanctions. International efforts to resurrect the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Actions (JCPOA), have stagnated. The United States withdrew from the agreement under Donald Trump's government.
