A new twist has come in the case of waiving the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana, the killer of Beant Singh, the former Chief Minister of the Indian state of Punjab. In response to the question of MP Ravneet Singh Bittu in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that no decision has been taken to convert Rajoana's death sentence to life imprisonment.

On 11 October, the Union Home Ministry had issued a letter to change the earlier release of eight prisoners and the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana to life imprisonment. This decision was taken due to the 550th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

According to the media report, this statement by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has caused panic in the political circles. They say how can the central government reverse with its own decision? Sukhbir Badal, the head of the Shiromani Akali Dal, the BJP's ally at the Center, has termed it as hurting the sentiments of the Sikhs, while SGPC President Gobind Singh Longowal has described it as a 'grave injustice' to the Sikhs. At the same time, Rajoana's sister Kamaljeet Kaur has called it a hoax and a joke.

In a letter sent to the Advisor to the Chandigarh Administrator, the Union Home Ministry said on 11 October that the Central Government has approved the conversion of Rajoana's death sentence to life imprisonment. In the letter, eight prisoners have been asked to start the process of giving relief from punishment under Article-161 of the Constitution and one Sikh prisoner under Article -72.
