Strong criticism of demand for inclusion of transgender in OBC list

There has been a demand by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to include transgender persons in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list for reservation in higher education and government jobs. If the move is accepted by the government, trans persons will be able to compete with OBCs for 27% quota in education and jobs. While the move has been welcomed by some sections of the society, and while others see it as 'eating' seats reserved for OBC castes, the affected community sharply criticized the note, demanding instead Is.

Activist Grace Bano, who was recently honored by the Tamil Nadu government for her work on transgender rights, says, “This government move is a sham in the name of reservation. If someone is cheering, it could possibly be a trans person from upper castes or classes. But, Dalit/Bahujan/Adivasi (DBA) trans persons are disappointed with this note.”

Theater practitioner Living Smile Vidya says, “Most of the trans individuals who run NGOs for queer communities are from the upper castes, while the majority of people doing sex work are from OBC, BC communities, and most of the beggars are from Dalit communities, "She tells. “Reservation means representation of oppressed castes. But, the government's move to push everyone under the OBC category is injustice. The BJP government is working against reservation, which is evident from this move.
