A student from Karnataka was killed in shelling in Kharkiv city on Tuesday morning, becoming the first Indian victim in the Ukraine war.  In a tweet, India's External Affairs Ministry announced the Indian's death.

"With deep regret, we confirm that one Indian student was killed in shelling in Kharkiv this morning," the statement read. The ministry stated that it is in contact with the student's family. "We express our heartfelt sympathies to the family," the statement added.

According to a state government official, the student was from the Haveri area of Karnataka.

"A student from Chalageri in Haveri district, Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, was killed in the shelling," Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Manoj Rajan said to media.

According to the MEA, India's Foreign Secretary is meeting with Russian and Ukrainian ambassadors to underline the country's desire for "immediate safe passage" for Indian nationals currently trapped in crisis zones in Kharkiv and other cities. "Our ambassadors in Russia and Ukraine are also taking similar steps," the MEA stated.

The city of Kharkiv is seeing an increase in violence between Ukrainian and Russian soldiers.

According to official sources, the deteriorating situation in Kharkiv is a cause for significant concern, and the government's first priority is to ensure the safety and security of Indian people in the city.
