According to a study, current Covid-19 vaccinations give effective protection against severe disease caused by both the Delta and Omicron forms.

Because of its capacity to resist the virus-killing neutralising antibodies that the body produces in response to vaccination, the Omicron variety has been proven to induce breakthrough infections among the vaccinated.

However, researchers from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) found that existing Covid vaccinations can produce cellular immunity, or the formation of protective immune cells like killer and memory cells, even against Omicron. Nature has published the findings.

"Our findings provide immunological context for the observation that, despite significantly reduced neutralising antibody responses and increased breakthrough infection, current vaccines still provide robust protection against severe disease and hospitalisation due to the Omicron variant," said Dan H. Barouch, director of BIDMC's Center for Virology and Vaccine Research.
