Kochi: Surendran K Patel, an American citizen of Indian origin, has created history by becoming a district judge in the US state of Texas. Born in a poor middle-class family, Surendran's story sounds like a film story. Surendran dropped out after class 10 and then became a bidi worker due to poverty. But, after this, his luck shone and he moved to America.
According to a report, Surendran K Patel was born to a daily wage laborer in Kasaragod, Kerala. Surendran's childhood passed through extreme poverty. To help with the household expenses, he started making bidis with his sister. Due to poor family conditions, he left his studies after the 10th and became a full-time bidi worker. However, after a year's break in studies, Surendran returned to studies and joined the Ike Nayanar Memorial Government College. But, due to poverty, he used to make bidis even during this time, so his attendance in college was not completed. Because of this, he was not allowed to appear in the examination. But, after this, he sought permission from the teachers of the college to appear in the examination.
Patel says, ''If I had told the teachers that I am a laborer making bidis. So, the teachers would have sympathy for me. But, without talking about it, I told them that if I do not get good marks in the examination, I will leave my studies.'' However, when the result came, Surendran topped. After this, the teachers supported him a lot. Because of this, he also topped in graduation. Since Surendran was trying to become a lawyer and wanted to do LLB from Calicut Government Law College. But, due to financial constraints, he had to face difficulties here too. In his first year of college, he got help from some friends. Meanwhile, he started doing housekeeping work in a hotel.
After obtaining his law degree in the year 1995, he started practice in Hosdarg, Kerala, and continued to achieve success. Thereafter, in the year 2004, he married a junior lawyer named Sudha. Later, Sudha got a job as a staff nurse and shifted to Delhi. He started practicing in the Supreme Court in Delhi itself. After this, his wife Sudha got a job in Houston, USA. Due to his wife's job in Houston, both went to America.
Sudha used to do her job in America, but Surendran Patel used to work in a grocery store. After this, he started practicing as a lawyer in America as well. Where he also started getting success. After this, he realized that he could become a judge. Since his wife was employed there, he tried to take US citizenship. Fortunately, in the year 2017, he also got US citizenship.
In the year 2020, he tried for the first time to become a judge. However, he was not successful at first. But Surendran Patel did not give up. In the year 2022, he once again presented the claim. However, many people told him to give up his dream of becoming a judge. But Surendran had other plans in mind. After many efforts, the Democratic Party declared him as its candidate. Where he won the election by defeating the opposition Republican candidate. With increasing stature and continuous efforts, Surendran's dream finally came true and he became the 240th District Judge of the US state of Texas.
