Sudan: Several mediation efforts are underway, according to UN Special Representative for Sudan Volker Perthes, to resolve the current political crisis and restore constitutional order in Sudan, where a coup was staged on October 25. Perthes, speaking from Sudan's capital, Khartoum, told reporters in New York City that the situation in the Northeast African country is "stable but very tense" following the military takeover, according to reports.

On October 25, the Sudanese army detained civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and his cabinet after dissolving the power-sharing transitional government. "Many of the interlocutors we are speaking within Khartoum, as well as internationally and regionally, are expressing a strong desire for us to move quickly to get out of the crisis and return to the steps of normalcy, to the steps of political transition, as we saw it before October 25th, on the basis of the Constitutional Declaration," Perthes said.

Multiple negotiations are taking place in Khartoum to resolve the crisis. Perthes explained, "There is a lot of shuttling between the General Command in the prime minister's residence and other places where other officials are located." He also mentioned the UN's role in the talks.
