Sudanese police have confirmed that one protester was killed and 30 others were injured amid mass protests in Khartoum and other major cities calling for the country to return to civilian control.

During the demonstrations on Sunday, 22 police officers were hurt, and the police used "minimal legal force" in dealing with the protesters, according to media sources. 86 protesters were arrested during the rallies, and legal action was taken against them, police said on Monday.

Two protesters were killed and 68 others were injured, according to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), a non-governmental organisation. Despite efforts by parties involved to find a political solution to the situation in the North African country, tens of thousands of protestors flocked to the streets on Sunday to demand civilian government.

The UN initiated an intra-Sudanese political process to settle the conflict on January 8. The UN ambassador for Sudan, Volker Perthes, said in a statement that the political process in Sudan will seek a "sustainable route ahead towards democracy and peace." It wasn't immediately apparent when the talks will start.

Sudan has been in the midst of a political crisis since General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the Sudanese Armed Forces' general commander, declared a coup on October 25, 2021, and dissolved the Sovereign Council and government.
