Himachal Pradesh: The Sukhu government, under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has been grappling with increasing criticism despite having completed less than two years in office. Initially seen as a promising leader, Sukhu's tenure has been marred by administrative failures and unfulfilled promises, leading to significant public discontent.

Unfulfilled Promises and Governance Failures

Upon taking office, Sukhu made several ambitious promises to enhance infrastructure, address unemployment, and boost the state's economy. However, many of these promises remain unmet. Notably, the state's unemployment allowance program, which was a central element of his election campaign, has yet to deliver tangible results. Promises to improve rural road connectivity and enhance the tourism sector have also seen minimal progress, frustrating local residents who feel the government has not delivered on its commitments.

Issues with Public Services

In addition to unmet promises, Sukhu's administration has been criticized for mismanagement in essential services. The healthcare system and educational institutions are facing significant disruptions, with hospitals lacking basic amenities and government schools struggling with a shortage of teachers and resources. Bureaucratic inefficiency and disorganization within the state machinery have exacerbated these issues. Critics also point to the CM's reactive approach to governance, addressing crises only after they arise rather than preventing them.

Controversies in Shimla

Recent controversies over alleged demographic changes in Shimla have further fueled concerns about the government's intentions. Protests by locals outside a mosque in Shimla, accusing the government of ignoring illegal constructions and changing the city's demographic structure, have heightened tensions. Despite government attempts to downplay these concerns, many residents feel the administration is failing to protect the region's cultural and demographic heritage.

Public Perception and Assembly Session Incident

A recent incident where CM Sukhu was seen napping during an important assembly debate has added to perceptions of mismanagement. This event, coupled with ongoing issues such as delayed salary payments to government employees, has triggered widespread outrage. Teachers, health workers, and other public sector employees have faced prolonged delays in salary payments, leading to protests and further eroding public confidence in the administration.

Rising Drug Menace

One of the most alarming issues during Sukhu's tenure is the escalating drug problem in Himachal Pradesh. Once celebrated for its natural beauty and tourism, the state is now struggling with a severe drug crisis, particularly among the youth. Increased drug abuse has been linked to rising criminal activities, with drug trafficking becoming more prevalent in areas like Kullu, Manali, and Mandi. The government's lack of effective action, inadequate law enforcement efforts, and insufficient rehabilitation programs have drawn significant criticism.

A Growing Discontent

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's time as Chief Minister has been marked by widespread dissatisfaction due to unfulfilled promises, administrative inefficiencies, and rising social issues. The state's youth are particularly affected, facing challenges related to unemployment and drug addiction. As public discontent grows, it is evident that confidence in the Sukhu administration is diminishing.
