The legendary Indian politician, Sumitra Mahajan celebrates her 80th birthday this year on April 12. Sumitra who belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party has represented the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh from 1989 to 2019. She has served as a Union Minister from 2002 to 2004 in the Ministry of Human Resources, Communications and Petroleum. She retired from electoral politics after serving as the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019.

Her unanimous victory highlighted the altered political equations, with the BJP-led NDA holding sway both inside and outside of Parliament. She is only the second woman to serve as speaker of the Lok Sabha, which highlights how far women still have to advance before they can fully participate in politics.

In the 16th Lok Sabha, Mahajan was the senior and oldest female member of parliament.

From 1999 to 2004, she held the ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Communications and Information Technology, and Human Resource Development while serving as a Union Minister of State.

She has previously served as the deputy mayor and a member of the Indore Municipal Corporation.

She also served as the Chairwoman of the Standing Committees on Rural Development (2004–2009) and Social Justice and Empowerment (2004–2009). (2009-2014).

President Ram Nath Kovind presented her with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in the nation, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in November of last year in recognition of her contributions.
