SAN FRANCISCO: Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, announced on Wednesday that the company will invest USD9.5 billion in new offices and data centres in the United States this year, creating 12,000 full-time employment and thousands more among local suppliers, partners, and communities.

Last year, Google,  contributed USD617 billion in economic activity to millions of American businesses, organisations, creators, developers, and publishers. Pichai said. Furthermore, the Android app economy supported roughly two million jobs last year, and YouTube's creative ecosystem will support 394,000 employment in 2020," he added.

Google has invested more than USD37 billion in its offices and data centres in 26 US states over the last five years, producing over 40,000 full-time employment. "This is in addition to the business's investment of more than USD40 billion in research and development in 2020 and 2021," the corporation stated.

While it may appear contradictory to increase investment in physical workplaces as the world welcomes more flexibility in how we work, Pichai believes it is necessary. "Yet we believe that investing in our campuses is more vital than ever, and that doing so will result in better products, a higher quality of life for our employees, and stronger communities," the Google CEO stated.

Investing in data centres, on the other hand, will "continue to enable the digital tools and services that help individuals and organisations prosper."  "We want to create new norms for green building design as we strive toward powering our offices and data centres on carbon-free electricity 24/7 by 2030."

As part of its USD1 billion housing commitment in California, Google will continue to invest in workplaces and support affordable housing initiatives in the Bay Area.
