Sunderlal Bahuguna, the pioneer of the Chipko movement, was born on 9 January 1927 at a place called 'Maroda' near Tehri, Uttarakhand in the land of the gods. He moved to Lahore after his primary education and from there B.A. After coming in contact with Meeraben and Thakkar Bappa in 1949, they strived for the upliftment of the Dalit students and have established Thakkar Bappa Hostel in Tehri for them. He left the movement to give the Dalits the right to enter the temple.

With the support of his wife, Mrs. Vimala Nautiyal, he established the 'Hill Navjivan Mandal' in Silaira itself. In 1971, to prevent liquor shops from opening, Sundarlal Bahuguna not only ran cable for sixteen days but also sat on a hunger strike. Due to the Chipko movement, he became famous as Vrikshamitra worldwide.

Bahuguna's 'Chipko movement' declaration is-

What are the favors of the forest, soil, water, and wind?
Soil, water and wind, living grounds.

According to Sundarlal Bahuguna, planting trees is much more important than cutting them. Impressed by Bahuguna's work, America's Friend of Nature instituted him in 1970. In addition, he was honored with many awards. Today, this great man who considered the environment as a permanent asset, also came to be called 'Environment Gandhi'.
