Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday announced that he will sponsor heart surgeries of 34 children. The generous step from Gavaskar can prove to be life-saver for the children, who come from humble background and battling from the problem

The surgeries will be conducted at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Gavaskar said,  “These tiny tots are waiting for their hearts to be healed. Paediatric cardiac treatment should be within the reach of every child and every parent irrespective of financial or social status. I am pleased that Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre is now open in Mumbai and will provide precious life-saving service to the people."

According to a survey, congenital heart disease is common in Indian children and more than 2 lakh children are born with congenital heart disease in the country. Gavaskar said Paediatric cardiac treatment should be a right for every child irrespective of their financial and social background.

Gavaskar, who is regarded as one of the best openers to have played for India, had an illustrious career with the Indian team. Gavaskar played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for India amassing 10122 and 3092 runs respectively in the two formats. Gavaskar is currently on commentary duties in the ongoing 11th season of the Indian Premier League.
