Supreme court asks ED on Chidambaram's bail plea, next hearing on November 26

New Delhi: The bail plea of former Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader P. Chidambaram in the INX Media case was heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. On Chidambaram's petition, the court has asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to reply. The ED will now reply on Monday and the matter will be heard next on 26 November.

Chidambaram's counsel Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi had requested an immediate hearing on the bail plea. The lawyers told the top court that their clients have been in captivity for the last 3 months, so they should be given relief by hearing the case soon. Let me tell you, the Delhi High Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of the Congress leader in the ED case related to INX-Media. Suresh Kumar Kait, a single judge of the High Court, dismissed the bail plea of the former Union Minister, considering the charges against him as serious.

The ED was arrested last month by the ED investigating the money laundering case. He is currently imprisoned in Tihar Jail. Opposing the bail plea, the ED has said that Chidambaram misused his position for his benefit. In the year 2007 under the INX Media case, the then Union Finance Minister Chidambaram did not follow the rules in granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to INX Media after allegedly taking foreign funds.
