New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday (October 21) allowed the Uttar Pradesh government to set up new wood-based industries in the state. The UP government issued a notification on March 1, 2019, deciding to set up the industry with an employment generation potential of over Rs 80,000 crore with an investment of Rs 3000 crore. The NGT had stayed the report. The apex court's verdict will boost employment prospects in rural areas.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna allowed the UP government's appeal against the NGT verdict. The bench has said in its decision that, for the sustainable development of the state and considering the availability of wood, the license can be allowed. However, as a responsible state, concerns related to the environment should be duly addressed.

According to the UP government, the NGT decision ignores the central government's support to the notification, along with the state's concerns. The government had termed the decision as based on a "unilateral" approach. The NGT, in its judgment, had cancelled the temporary licence issued thereafter, in addition to the March 1, 2019 notice.
