New Delhi: The Supreme Court has got 2 new justices. Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice KV Vishwanathan were sworn in as judges by Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud today i.e. Friday (May 19) morning itself. With these two judges, there is no vacancy of a judge in the Supreme Court. This means that the apex court will now be able to function at full capacity. There are a total of 34 posts of judges in the Supreme Court, out of which 2 were vacant till now. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of both these judges on May 16. The central government took a quick decision on both of these and the notification of approval was issued on the 18th itself.
Let us inform that, KV Vishwanathan will remain the judge of the Supreme Court till May 25, 2031. At the same time, after the retirement of Justice JB Pardiwala on August 11, 2030, he will become the Chief Justice (CJI). Significantly, KV Vishwanathan is the 10th judge in the history of the apex court, who has reached here directly from the profession of advocacy. Not only this, he will also be the fourth person in the country to become CJI after becoming a judge directly from a lawyer. In this way, the appointment of Vishwanath is going to create many records in itself. Before him, Justice SM Sikri, Justice UU Lalit, Justice PS Narasimha also came from the profession of advocacy and became the Chief Justice.
Let us tell you that KV Vishwanathan has been the Additional Solicitor General in the past. He was associated with the legal profession for 30 years and during this period he represented many high profile cases. He has also worked with KK Venugopal, who was the Attorney General of the country. In April 2009 itself, KV Vishwanathan was elevated to the rank of senior advocate by the apex court. At the same time, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra was till now the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh, from where he has been promoted to the Supreme Court.
