New Delhi: The bail plea of controversial portal AltNews co-editor Mohammed Zubair was heard in the Supreme Court today. While hearing the petition, the apex court today granted bail to Mohammed Zubair in a case registered at Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Justice Indira Banerjee sent notices to the UP government and the police, saying that Zubair is being granted interim bail with conditions. Zubair will not be able to move out of the judicial arena. At the same time, Zubair will not be able to make any tweets till the decision in the case comes.

At the same time, Tushar Mehta pleaded with the court that the interim order should be postponed to Monday, but the court did not accept it. Mohammed Zubair, accused of insulting Hindu deities, approached the Supreme Court on Thursday citing a threat to his life. In the petition, Zubair has sought quashing of the FIR registered against him by the Uttar Pradesh Police in a case of hurting religious sentiments. The Allahabad High Court had on June 13 dismissed a written petition filed by Zubair.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Zubair, said the FIR lodged by the UP police against his client shows that he has not committed any crime. Gonsalves said his job is to verify the news, and he was playing the role of fact-checking hate speeches. We went to the Allahabad High Court, but there was no relief.
