Dehradun: The ancient city of Joshimath in Uttarakhand has been declared a landslide-prone area. With each passing day, the ground here is collapsing. Cracks in homes are constantly increasing. In such a situation, it has been decided to demolish unsafe houses and buildings. Meanwhile, the apex court has categorically refused to give an urgent hearing on the Joshimath crisis.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court to save Joshimath. It requested to declare Joshimath as a national calamity and provide financial assistance to the affected. But, the Supreme Court refused to give an urgent hearing to the petition, saying that everything need not be brought to the court. Democratically elected institutions exist to look into this.

On the other hand, the demolition of unsafe buildings started on Tuesday (January 10) in cracking Joshimath. Chief Secretary Dr. SS Sandhu has issued instructions in this regard. According to media reports, in view of the increasing threat in Joshimath, the work of demolishing houses, hotels, and government buildings has been started. This work is being done under the supervision of experts from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee. A team of NDRF is also present at the spot.

Disaster Management Department Secretary Dr. Ranjit Sinha said that the CBRI team reached Joshimath on Monday. The team has inspected the Malari Inn and Mount View Hotel. These two hotels will be demolished first. Explosives will not be used to demolish any house or hotel, as it will increase the risk of landslides. In such a situation, the entire work will be done with the help of machines and laborers. For this, 60 laborers, JCB, a large crane, and two trucks have been deployed.
