A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court for monitoring on Twitter. The petition says that hate is being spread in the society through fake news and inflammatory messages from the fake account. This petition has been filed by BJP leader Vineet Goenka. The petitioner has said that there are hundreds of fake Twitter handles and bogus Facebook accounts in the names of famous people and dignitaries.

The petition said, 'These fake Twitter handles and Facebook accounts use real photographs of constitutional officers and famous citizens. This is the reason that common people believe such messages issued from Twitter handle and Facebook account. Fake accounts are used to incite casteism and violence, which pose a threat to the unity of the country.

The petition further states that at present there are around 3.5 crore Twitter handles. Facebook account number is 35 crore. Experts believe that about 10 percent (3.5 million) of these Twitter handles and 10 percent of Facebook accounts (3.5 crore) are duplicate-bogus-fake.
