New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the Central government on a petition challenging 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in all India quota in medical and dental courses. A notice has also been sent to a petition seeking a ban on this reservation policy for the years 2021-22. The government had recently decided to provide reservations to OBC and EWS in the All India quota of medical/dental colleges in the states.

The decision was taken by the central government on July 29. The health ministry had said that the decision will benefit about 1,500 OBC students per year in MBBS and 2,500 OBC students in post-graduation. With this, 550 students from the EWS category will benefit from MBBS and about 1,000 students in postgraduates. In 1986, under the direction of the apex court, 'All India Quota' (AIQ) was introduced in medical institutions in all states of the country.

The All India Quota is the share of seats in the medical college under the state, which the colleges in the state give to the central government. The apex court in its direction had said that all states will give 15 percent undergraduate seats and 50 percent post-graduate seats of their medical colleges to the central government. These seats, which came under the central government account, were named 'All India Quota'.
