New Delhi: The hearing on the bail plea of Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Rampur and senior leader Azam Khan has been deferred in the Supreme Court. On behalf of Azam Khan, his lawyer Kapil Sibal argued in court. Kapil Sibal said that the lower court has kept the verdict on the bail plea pending for a long time. Therefore, the top court should hear and give an appropriate order.

Arguing for a bail plea in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, Kapil Sibal said there are 87 FIRs registered against Azam Khan. Four cases are going on, in two cases they have been granted bail. While the high court had reserved its verdict on his bail plea on December 4 itself, it is yet to pronounce the verdict. To which the top court only said that we will see next week. The Supreme Court has agreed to the hearing after the arguments made by Kapil Sibal. The top court will now hear Azam Khan's bail plea on Friday.

Azam Khan was arrested on February 26, 2020. He has been in prison for the past 26 months. Azam Khan was granted bail in a case on March 8, when it was claimed that the verdict in two other cases is yet to come. After the BJP came to power in 2017, more than 80 cases were registered against Azam in two years.
