New Delhi: The Supreme Court today (November 18) has rejected the petition demanding a law on population control in the country. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition saying that it is a social issue and it is the responsibility of the government to make laws. A bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul told advocate Ashwani Upadhyay that such petitions are filed for publicity. The top court said that you want publicity, it is not our work to give you publicity.

At the same time, during the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the apex court that we are doing whatever we can to control the population growth in our capacities. Earlier, the central government had said that family planning is a voluntary program, it would not be appropriate to make it mandatory. Petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay before the court said that the court should direct the Law Commission to prepare a report regarding population control.

In response to this, the court said how the Law Commission can prepare a report on this. Withdraw the petition, or, we will dismiss it. Let us tell you that it was said in the petition that in view of the present conditions of the country, it is very important that the right of individuals to get clean air, water, food, health, and employment is ensured.
