New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday overturned a Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling granting an interim stay on a Haryana law guaranteeing residents of the state a 75 percent quota in private sector jobs.
The Haryana government was also ordered not to take coercive action against employers by a bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha.
"We do not want to deal with the merits of the case; instead, we intend to ask the high court to rule quickly, no later than four weeks." "In the meantime, Haryana is directed not to take coercive action against employers, and parties are directed not to seek adjournment and to appear before the court to determine the hearing date." "The high court's impugned order is set aside since the high court did not provide sufficient reasons for stopping the law," the bench said. The Haryana government was represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The ruling came after the Haryana government appealed a Punjab and Haryana High Court order granting an interim stay on its statute establishing a 75 percent quota for state residents in private sector jobs.
